Pit Bull Dogs - Breeding

More than 200 pit bull dogs are euthanized each week in Clark County alone. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE to breed your pit bull. Don't be part of the problem - be part of the solution. Spay or neuter your pit bull!

Anyone who cares about the welfare of these dogs should save a homeless pit bull before adding more dogs to a completely saturated market or contributing to a heartless industry by purchasing a pet shop puppy.

Most people have no idea how desperate the situation is for millions of homeless companion animals, especially pit bulls. These dogs ahve a lot more going against them than any other breed. They are regularly maligned by the media, feared and misunderstood by the public, too often owned by abusive and irresponsible individuals, innocent victims of kill policies in shelters, and targeted by municipal bans, breed specific restrictions and legislation.

Many animal shelters have a kill policy for pit bulls. These dogs and puppies have done nothing wrong; they are destroyed just because they are pit bulls. The shelters that give these dogs a chance are completely overloaded and must euthanize them because they are unable to find good homes for them. The "lucky" ones spend months, sometimes years, rotting behind bars and lying on cold cement floors. Before you breed a pit bull, we urge you to spend some time volunteering at your local animal shelter and witness first hand the tragedy of our homeless pet population.

There are many websites that will give you "tips' on how to find a "responsible breeder." In our opinion, at this time any breeder of pit bull dogs who is producing litters is not a responsible breeder. The situation for pit bulls in this country and in several others is critical and nothing can be more irresponsible that bringing more of these dogs into the world, and the only ethical path is to participate in a moratorium on any breeding activities. For anyone who thinks this is a drastic measure, we invite you to spend some time at your local animal shelter - witness the hundreds of innocent companion animals killed simply due to lack of space.

In addition to "accidental breeders," the backyard breeders and the so-called responsible breeders, we have puppy mills. Puppy mills are breeding facilities that produce puppies in large numbers. The puppies are sold either directly to the public via the internet, newspaper ads, at the mill itself, or are sold to brokers and pet shops across the country. Conditions at puppy mills are atrocious. Breeders are confined in small cages until they are no longer able to produce litters; then they are discarded (killed, brought to a shelter or abandoned). Some very few lucky ones are rescued by groups dedicated to putting an end to puppy mills.

Puppies are a tremendous source of revenue for millers and pet shops, their best customers. We have puppy mills right here in Nevada, which is where the puppies you see in the local pet shops come from. Don't let them fool you wiht misleading statements like "locally bred" dogs - sure they're locally bred, at Nevada puppy mills.

Scenes from puppy mills are nightmarish. The dogs taht are occasionally rescued from millers are pathetic - and genetic defects abound, which are passed on to those cute little puppies you see at the pet shop.
